Hey Run Maker crew,
Alistair here, fresh off the Shelley 10K on July 20, 2025, hosted by the Western Australian Marathon Club (WAMC) along Perth’s stunning Shelley foreshore. With my training partner by my side (in front of me) and a mate filming the action, I went all in to break 39 minutes and score a 10K PB.
Here’s the story and a lesson that hit hard.

This was my second race of the season and I’m maturing in the art of racing.
Past mistakes?
Going out too hot and blowing up.
Not this time.
I stuck to my plan, holding a steady 3:50–3:55 min/km pace through the flat, scenic course.
My Mizuno Neo Cosmo shoes (grab them at SBR Collective https://sbrcollective.com.au/) felt light and snappy, perfect for the riverside paths.
With my Garmin synced to my coach’s plan, I ran my own race, resisting the urge to chase the early speedsters. The final 2K threw a curveball, a stiff headwind and no runners to draft.
I pushed through, clocking decent splits. As I hit the grass with 100m to go, I saw the finish clock: 38:35.
Sub-39 was in reach!
I dug deep, sprinting with everything left. Crossing the line, the clock read 38:59 one second shy of my goal.
My watch showed 38:45, teaching me a key lesson: course timers and GPS don’t always align.
Gutted but proud, I nabbed a PB and learned to trust my pacing.
